Google Alerts is an incredibly versatile tool that provides up to the minute information about political, social, and academic issues of interest to you. For instance, I use google to alert me every time an anti-gay hate crime occurs - I usually learn the information before it posts to major news sites. Likewise, to help convince my freshmen that Julius Caesar is actually still relevant to their lives, I get alerts every time "Crossing the Rubicon" is referenced (a bit too often, I've found.
